I've always wondered when we were going to see the emergence of such a format. When one compares the number of people who own devices capable of reading ebooks to the number of people who actually read ebooks it's a bit disheartening.

Symbian devices are widely used, yet comparatively few people make use of applications such as Mobipocket to read ebooks on their phones. I, on the other hand, cannot live without ebooks, thus the emergence of a versatile format makes me happy, since it means that I'll be able to convert to plain old text format, which suits me just fine :-)

just bit the bullet and ordered a Kindle, so Amazon has their claws into me. I thought the wireless downloads would be a plus and the Sony product certainly isn't cheaper (nor are other brands I looked at).

The transition to ebooks could be extremely fast in the USA. Borders is within weeks of bankruptcy (or similar reorg) and Barnes and Noble will likely meet a similar fate within a couple of years. Falling prices for digital readers will accelerate the shift.
Even if people wanted to pay more for print copies of books, they just aren't going to have the cash to indulge in that preference.
